Understanding Toxic Shock Syndrome -- the Basics

 Toxic shock syndrome

What Is Toxic Shock Syndrome?

Toxic shock syndrome is a sudden, potentially fatal condition. It's caused by the release of poisonous substances from an overgrowth of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus, or staph, which is found in many women's bodies. Toxic shock syndrome affects menstruating women, especially those who use super-absorbent tampons. The body responds with a sharp drop in blood pressure that deprives organs of oxygen and can lead to death.

This disease made headlines in the late 1970s and early 1980s after the deaths of several young women who were using a brand of super-absorbent tampon that was later removed from the market.

Toxic shock syndrome is still mostly a disease of menstruating women who use tampons. But it has also been linked to the use of menstrual sponges, diaphragms, and cervical caps. A woman who has recently given birth also has a higher chance of getting toxic shock. And it can happen to men and women who have been exposed to staph bacteria while recovering from surgery, a burn, an open wound, or the use of a prosthetic device.

More than a third of all cases of toxic shock involve women under 19, and up to 30% of women who have had the disease will get it again. If you have ever had toxic shock, you must look out for the symptoms so you can get immediate medical care.

People who die from toxic shock are killed by the body's response to the poisons released by staph bacteria. Most people suffer hypotensive shock, in which the heart and lungs stop working.

If you are menstruating and have a high fever with vomiting, especially if you have been using tampons, you must get medical help right away. If you are using a tampon, menstrual sponge, diaphragm, or cervical cap when you become ill, remove it immediately, even before calling your doctor.

What Causes Toxic Shock Syndrome?
Toxic shock syndrome is caused by a poison produced by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This bacteria is one of several staph bacteria that cause skin infections in burn patients and hospital patients who have had surgery.

What Causes Toxic Shock Syndrome? continued...
Staph is normally -- and harmlessly -- present in the vagina. How staph causes toxic shock syndrome is not understood. But two conditions are necessary: First, the bacteria need an environment in which they can grow rapidly and release poisons. Then the poisons must get into the bloodstream.

A tampon saturated with blood is a supportive place for rapid growth of bacteria. It also seems to matter what the tampon is made of. Polyester foam provides a better environment for the growth of bacteria than either cotton or rayon fibers.

In cases from menstrual sponges, diaphragms, and cervical caps, either the device had been in the vagina for a long time -- more than 30 hours -- or, in the case of the sponge, pieces of the sponge remained in the vagina.

The way in which bacterial poisons enter the bloodstream may also be related to tampon use. Sliding a tampon into place in the vagina may make microscopic tears in the walls of the vagina, rupturing tiny blood vessels. A super-absorbent tampon -- especially if it's left in place too long, or if it is used when the menstrual flow is light -- can dry out the vagina, making such tearing even more likely.

Researchers investigating the causes of toxic shock syndrome have ruled out feminine deodorant sprays and douches, underwear, and other clothing. The condition is also unrelated to the woman's menstrual history, drug or alcohol use, cigarette smoking, swimming or bathing, or sexual activity.

Is your sanitary napkin safe?

According to a research, an urban woman disposes almost 16,800 pads in her lifetime. Despite the costs that are incurred to buy these pads every month, the growing health risks and grave environmental impacts associated with disposable napkins, many still find it difficult to switch to reusable alternatives.

Some of the harmful chemicals that can be found in sanitary napkins and tampons are:

Dioxin: We have a tendency to assume that if the product is pure white, it is clean. However, the cotton that is received after harvesting, is usually cream in colour. The manufacturers of sanitary napkins use a chemical called dioxin to bleach the cotton. Unless the pads are specifically labelled as non-bleached one can assume it has undergone this process. Although the levels of dioxin in sanitary napkins are quite low, they are still dangerous as dioxin accumulates in the fat stores of the body and can add up to the residual levels over time. Dioxin is linked with the following side effects in the body: pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cancer, immune system damage, hormone dysfunction, impaired fertility, diabetes and impaired thyroid function.

Rayon: Apart from cotton, rayon is yet another synthetic polymer that is added to these napkins to enhance the absorbing capacity. Rayon also has dioxin in it.

Pesticides and Herbicides: These are the chemicals that are sprayed on the cotton crops. A chemical named furan stays on the cotton long after it has been harvested, which can cause harm. These have been linked with the following effects in the body: infertility, hormonal disruption, thyroid malfunction, diabetes, endometriosis and depression.

Artificial Fragrances and Deodorant: These substances are added to the napkins during the manufacturing process. Although they can also enter the bloodstream, like in the cases of pesticides and dioxin, they can also have an effect locally on the vagina and in turn cause allergies and skin reactions.

Toxic Shock Syndrome: Toxic shock syndrome is not caused by the chemicals discussed above, but rather from an overgrowth of staphylococcus aureus bacteria in the vagina which causes a release of toxins and poisonous substances into the bloodstream. These toxins can cause a sudden fall in blood pressure.

Using sanitary napkins or tampons for prolonged periods can encourage the growth of the staphylococcus bacteria. The occurrence of these symptoms in conjunction with tampon use may be a sign of toxic shock syndrome: diarrhea, vomiting, sunburn-like rash, dizziness, cold and fever.

The alternatives: For women and mothers of newly pubescent girls who wish to choose a safer route, fortunately many options are available.

Organic sanitary napkins: While these products may avoid the pesticide residues from commercially grown cotton and the chlorine dioxide gas used in bleaching, there still remains the problem of disposal.

Organic Cloth Pads: One option for safe and reusable sanitary items would be organic cloth pads made with cotton, hemp or even bamboo. They are not a hassle to store or clean.

Used pads can be placed in a small bag such as a cosmetic bag for when you are home to rinse and soak them. The ones with wings fold up onto themselves and snap shut so only the outer layer is showing - this is great for disposing used pads.

Menstrual Cups: For active women and girls, a reusable menstrual cup made with natural, nontoxic materials like gum rubber is an excellent choice. A good quality cup costs about Rs 700, but you will likely never have to buy another one for the next ten years.

Menstrual cups are easy to use and in most cases, you don’t even need a pad when wearing one. Just be sure to get the correct size.

Masturbating While Pregnant

Masturbating during pregnancy

Masturbation is the stimulation of the genitals for a sexually pleasurable experience. Women nowadays are also open to this kind of activity. Women’s masturbation is often done using the fingers or hands and may also be practiced with the help of sex toys. Since masturbation is known to be a substitute for sexual penetration and may bring satisfaction to both partners when done mutually, the question is, is it safe to masturbate when pregnant?

Is It Safe to Perform Masturbating While Pregnant?

It would be safe to perform masturbating while pregnant because it does not affect your baby, nor does it give any physical stresses to it. In fact, masturbating is known to relieve the stress. Moreover, masturbation is also known to give a much satisfying sexual pleasure than the actual sexual interaction itself. Since pregnancy kindles stress, it would be okay to masturbate since it is proven to relieve any physical tension and it is proven to help some people sleep.

However, there are some concerns with regard to having orgasms which may in fact spark the labor of a pregnant woman. When women orgasm, they are releasing oxytocin into the blood stream which is also known to be similar to the drug obstetricians use to spark the labor of the pregnant women. The similar drug is also used to help shrink the uterus back in its normal size after the labor of the pregnant women. However, there have been no clinical evidences that masturbating may spark a coming labor and this matter may be discussed with your physician.

Precautions for Performing Masturbating While Pregnant

While it is claimed safe to masturbate during pregnancy, there are also some precautions to be considered before doing so.

Be careful with sex toys. Some people rely on sex toys whenever they are masturbating, one of which is a vibrator. You must put in mind that a sex toy must be thoroughly cleaned and washed before usage so as to make sure that there will be no bacteria or germs that may touch the genitals as this may cause further infection, thus, affecting the pregnancy.

Know when to stop. One must always put in mind that whenever they feel any kind of pain or discomfort while masturbating, they must stop whatever it is that they are doing and when the pain continues even after the act, they must see a doctor for medical care assistance.

Avoid inserting foreign objects. Moreover, as some people use sex toys, some people would like to experiment by putting in various objects inside their vaginas or rectum while masturbating. These acts may harm the body physically since genitals are considered to be private and sensitive parts of the body. One must remember that there are various objects that may not be used for masturbation some of which are the objects which have bacteria or any kind of dirt that may cause infections, objects that may have sharp edges that may injure the surface or the walls of the vagina and the rectum, or small objects that may be left or lost inside the rectum or the vagina. The latter even needs medical treatment and tools to be removed inside the genitals.

What About Other Sexual Activities During Pregnancy?
1. Regular Sex
Regular sex is safe during pregnancy unless the doctor says otherwise. It is actually safe to have regular sex in certain positions because it will not harm the baby.

Many people believe that it is not safe for the baby to have sex in the midst of the pregnancy but the baby will not be physically harmed as he or she is protected inside the amniotic sac filled with amniotic fluid. This protection will help the baby be safe because it will absorb all the physical shocks that may harm him or her. Aside from the sac protecting the baby, there is also a mucus in the cervix of the mother which filters and prevents the germs or bacteria from entering during the penetration. Moreover, this mucus do not only prevents the causes of infection, but also the penis from touching the baby in the midst of penetration.

2. Oral Sex
Just like regular sex, oral sex is also safe during pregnancy, as it will not harm the baby physically. However, the partner must not blow any air into the genitals as there have been theories that blowing air into the vagina may enter the bloodstream. This may cause obstruction of a blood vessel and or embolism which were deemed deadly for both you are your baby. For the men, pregnant women may also do oral sex to their partners as it cannot harm the baby. Swallowing semen during pregnancy is also safe.

3. Anal Sex
Anal sex is also safe during pregnancy, but the partners must do it carefully. There are some points to remember before doing anal sex during the pregnancy. First is that it may be uncomfortable for both partners to do so if the pregnant woman has hemorrhoids, the hazard of pregnancy. Anal sex may cause bleeding to the hemorrhoids.

Most importantly, same rules and precautions with regard to anal sex applies whether you are pregnant or not and that is to do this kind of sex with proper hygiene. It would be dangerous to do vaginal or regular sex right after the anal sex if the penis was not cleaned. Inserting the penis in the vagina after an anal sex may cause bacteria to enter the vagina, thus, giving the possibility of infection and danger for the baby.

Is drinking Human Breast Milk beneficial for adults?

Drinking  Breast Milk

Question 1
My wife has large surplus of breast milk which was more than what our baby could consume. I started drinking it and actually found I like the taste of it. Is it safe..

Answer
Yes, breastmilk is quite beneficial for adults as well. It increases immunity in Adults, protect from different ailments ie Diarrhea, Infection, Flu etc as well as beneficial for female as well. As longer breastfeeding save woman from Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, arthritis etc.
Moreover, every Mammals milk composition is for its on Race.... Cows milk is made for Cows, Goats milk is for Goat.....As the metabolism is different in Cow, Goat, Camel & Human Being

Question2
Is it more healthy drinking human breast milk than drinking cow's milk. Are there any health benefits to drinking my wife's milk?
My husband wants to taste my breast milk. Is it okay if he does?

Answer
Susan Condon
lactation consultant
It's fine to offer him a taste. If he wants to
suckle, though, make sure that you, he, and/or the baby don't have a communicable virus or infection such as thrush or herpes that can pass easily among the three of you.

Remarkably, the immunological properties of breast milk benefit humans at any age. Human milk has even been used in some cases to treat various illnesses in adults. Many breastfeeding mothers tell me that their husbands and older siblings want to try Mom's milk. If you're comfortable with this request, what you do in the privacy of your home is up to you.

Cancer, arthritis, diabetes, even acne - is breast milk the new wonder cure?

There's little doubt that breast milk helps keep babies healthy, but could it be a miracle cure for adult illnesses, too?

That's the suggestion from a number of studies on its use as a treatment for conditions as varied as cancer, diarrhoea and diabetes.

In the latest research published last week, a Swedish team reported that the sizes of bladder tumours were reduced just five days after patients were injected with a breast milk compound.

The team at Gothenburg University had been looking at the antibiotic properties of breast milk when a researcher noticed that cancerous lung cells in a test tube died on contact with breast milk.

They then isolated the key compound - a protein called alpha-lactalbumin.

Subsequent tests showed the compound becomes lethal only when exposed to acid, as it is in the stomach, so the scientists mixed it with oleic acid, which is found in babies' stomachs, to form a compound they call HAMLET (human alphalactalbumin made lethal to tumour cells).

The Swedish team, led by Professor Catharina Svanborg, have shown that HAMLET attacks cancer cells, causing apoptosis - a form of cell suicide - in 40 kinds of tumour.

Studies with rats showed that after just seven weeks a highly invasive brain cancer called glioblastoma was seven times smaller in those treated with HAMLET.

The product has also been made into a cream and tested on warts (which share the same growth properties as tumours) and found to reduce their size by 75 per cent in 20 volunteers.

Researchers believe this could have implications for the treatment of cervical cancer, which is linked to the human papilloma virus, or HPV.

Its extraordinary ability to attack rogue cells could be why breast milk appears to protect babies from all sorts of illness - a protection that scientists believe could linger in the body for years.

Research shows that breast-fed babies have a reduced risk of many adult illnesses, including cancer. But cancer is not the only focus of breast milk research:

DIABETES & PARKINSON'S

Breast milk could be a new, and easier, source of stem cells. Stem cells are one of the most exciting discoveries in medicine, thanks to their remarkable ability to develop into many different cell types in the body, serving as a sort of internal repair system.

Stem cells are already being used to treat leukaemia and could soon help treat eye conditions.

Scientists are also researching their potential in the longer term for treating conditions such as spinal injuries, diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

A molecular biologist at Perth University, Australia, has discovered stem cells in breast milk.

Dr Mark Cregan and his team cultured the cells of human breast milk and found the result was positive for a stem cell marker called nestin.

'These cells have all the physical characteristics of stem cells,' he says. 'What we will do next is to see if they behave like stem cells.'

If so, this promises to provide researchers with an ethical and easier means of harvesting stem cells for researching treatments. Indeed, Dr Cregan believes this development could be possible within five years.

DIARRHOEA

Chronic diarrhoea kills up to 2.2 million people worldwide every year, mostly children in developing countries. Scientists are looking at whether breast milk could help treat it.

One approach is based on indigestible sugars known as oligosaccharides, many of which occur only in human milk. These sugars protect a baby from pathogens to which the mother has never been exposed.

It's thought oligosaccharides might be used to boost elderly people's weakened natural protection against pathogens. They could also be used after a course of strong antibiotics by helping re-colonise the digestive tract with beneficial bacteria.

So far, scientists have been able to genetically engineer mice to produce oligosaccharides in their milk and are working on bioengineering bacteria to produce human oligosaccharides to put into baby formula milk (to protect bottle-fed babies) or as supplements for adults.

Other compounds found in breast milk, called lysozyme and lactoferrin, have been tested on children with diarrhoea and have been shown to not only be an effective treatment, but to offer some sort of protection against future bouts.

ARTHRITIS

Breast milk contains lactoferrin, which helps prevent babies' immune systems from overreacting.

This is being looked as a potential treatment for auto-immune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and septic shock.

DEMENTIA

In Italy, studies are under way to see if a breast milk molecule called glyerophosphocholine (GPC) can improve mental function in people with dementia or victims of stroke and traumatic brain injury.

In many separate trials, GPC appears to improve memory, attention and orientation in people with various forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's.

It works like a brain nutrient, feeding the most energetically needy cells of our body, such as the brain cells.

ACNE

A science student at the University of California recently discovered that the lauric acid in breast milk reduces irritation and spots, and has developed an acne cream that is undergoing clinical trials.

The cream uses tiny gold particles to carry lauric acid into pores where its anti-microbial properties fight bacteria.

As breast milk is difficult to source, researchers are working to develop new sources for its healthgiving compounds.

The compounds lysozyme and lactoferrin are harvested for research from a specific variety of rice, and the milk from genetically engineered goats and cows.

Though some of these beneficial compounds are found in milk from other animals, others occur only in human milk, and the nonhuman versions are less potent when given to humans.

HEALTHCARE

Breast milk has a long history in healthcare. The ancient Egyptians used it as a medicine, blending it with honey. And in the Sixties, Albert Sabin, inventor of the oral polio vaccine, conducted a study that showed mice recovered from polio when fed human breast milk.

Today, some patients suffering from immunological diseases - such as HIV, leukaemia or hepatitis - or those receiving therapy that reduces the immune system, such as chemotherapy, have drunk breast milk in the hope that it can help adults, just as it helps sick babies.

It has also been taken by cancer patients who claim it slows the progression of the disease.

In the U.S., some milk banks provide it to adults. However, the benefits of drinking breast milk are unproven, and scientists maintain any beneficial effect may have more to do with placebo.

While British milk banks do sometimes receive requests to supply milk for adults, they are not able to provide it, says Gillian Weaver of the UK Association of Milk Banking.

'This is partly because of a lack of clinical evidence of benefit, but also because milk banks are not funded or organised on a scale in which they could provide it,' she says.

There is also understandable concern about diverting breast milk from needy babies.

Sex During Pregnancy

Sex during pregnancy

Couples often worry about having sex during pregnancy. They may be afraid that having sex could cause a miscarriage or harm the baby. With a normal pregnancy, sex is safe into the last weeks of pregnancy. In fact, some studies suggest that having sex during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of delivering too early!

The baby is well-cushioned by amniotic fluid and the strong muscles of the uterus. There is also a thick mucus plug that seals the cervix and helps to protect against infection.

It is best to talk to your doctor or nurse midwife about your specific situation to make sure you are considered at low risk for complications such a pre-term labor or miscarriage. Your doctor may advise you to limit your sex if there are signs or complications during your pregnancy. Women whose cervix seems to be opening early, and those with bleeding or an abnormally located placenta (placenta previa) should not have sex while they are pregnant.

Changes In Sexual Drive

You and your partner may experience fluctuations in sexual drive during the pregnancy. This is common during the different phases of pregnancy and will be different for everyone.

During the FIRST trimester many women experience extreme breast tenderness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and an increased need to urinate that might decrease their sexual drive. Some couples have a feeling of increased closeness that may influence their sexual desires.

Many women find that during the SECOND trimester the initial symptoms have gone away and they have an increased desire for sex. One theory for the increased desire is the increased blood supply in the pelvic region. Some women find freedom from birth control appealing and this adds to the continued sense of special closeness with their partner.

The desire for sex may change again in the THIRD trimester. Your abdomen is very large, which may make it awkward for you to have sex. Some women feel physically unattractive, while others may feel an increased sense of desirability.

The key to dealing with changes in sexual desire is to communicate your feelings and thoughts with your partner. Even with the changing desires for sex during pregnancy, some women have an increased desire for physical affection, gentle touching, and cuddling.

Positions

Having sex as your pregnancy progresses may be difficult or uncomfortable. There are a variety of positions that seem to work with greater comfort. These include:

*Both partners lying sideways, either face-to-face or spoon position.

*Woman on top.

*Rear entry.

*The woman lying on her back, knees bent, near the end of the bed.

'Unsafe' Sex

If you have oral sex, air should not be blown into your vagina. This can cause an air embolism or an air bubble to get in your bloodstream and block a blood vessel. This is extremely uncommon, but can be fatal to you and your baby.

When Limitations May Be Needed

There are some conditions or complications with pregnancy that may impact having sexual intercourse. Your health care provider may advise you to limit or avoid sex if you have one of the following conditions:

*A history of miscarriage
*A history of pre-term labor
*Vaginal bleeding or cramps
*Leakage of amniotic fluid or breaking of water
*Incompetent cervix (the cervix or opening of the uterus is weak and opens prematurely, which increases the risk for miscarriage or premature delivery)
*Placenta previa (the structure that provides nourishment to the baby is in front of the cervix or in the lower part of the uterus, instead of the usual location at the top of the uterus)
*Pain with intercourse
*Infection
You should call your health care provider if you are unsure whether sex is safe for you. If you have any symptoms that you are unsure about, such as pain, bleeding, discharge, or contractions after sex, contact your doctor.

Some women are advised to stop having sex in the last weeks of pregnancy. It is best to check with your health care provider for specific recommendations.

Remember, talking to your partner about your sexual feelings and desires during the pregnancy are important. These conversations will help lay the groundwork for the big changes about to take place for both of you -- parenthood!

*Lemon a day keeps Cancer away*

Lemon help against cancer

Just cut 2-3 thin slices of lemon in a cup/container and add drinking water which will become "alkaline water". Drink it for the whole day, just by adding drinking water.

The surprising benefits of lemon!

Lemon (Citrus) is a miraculous product to kill cancer cells. It is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.

Why do we not know about that? Because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version that will bring them huge profits. You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy.

How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations? As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes.

You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc...

It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer.

It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.

The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that: It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas ...

The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.

Are There Natural Ways to Improve Sagging Breasts?

sagging breast

Overview
Saggy breasts are usually the result of aging or pregnancy. The quickest fix for this problem is to have implants or a breast lift. However, these procedures are costly, require recovery time, affect nipple sensitivity and may look unnatural. Instead you can try natural methods to firm sagging breasts, such as aerobic and chest strengthening exercises as well as a few behavior modifications.

Push-ups

Chest exercises such as push-ups work all of your pectoral muscles and do not require special equipment. Strengthening these muscle groups will help lift sagging breasts. To do a push-up, lie face down with all of your body weight shifted to hands and toes. Bend your elbows and dip down to the floor as low as possible then push up to the starting position. Do three sets of 15 reps.

Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise will increase your heart rate and burn off the excess fat on your breasts. Try activities such as cross country skiing, elliptical training, rowing or swimming for cardio training that also works your chest. If you like running, walking, dancing or jumping rope, be sure to wear a properly fitted sports bra to keep your chest stable. Aim for at least half an hour of cardio most days of the week.

Yoga

Yoga is a gentle exercise that can be incorporated into your regular strength and aerobic regimen. It focuses on improving posture and works all of your major muscle groups. Overall tone and better posture will help lift sagging breasts naturally.

Don't Smoke

Smoking is detrimental to your body in many ways and contributing to saggy breasts is one of them. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, making it more difficult for essential nutrients to reach the skin. This causes skin tissue to break down, encouraging it to sag. Smoking also inhibits lung function, which creates more labored breathing during exercise.

Discharge During Pregnancy: What's Safe, What's Not

Pregnancy

Wondering if that unusual discharge is a natural part of pregnancy? Here’s how to tell.

Most expectant moms spring for new undies: not sexy ones, but practical “granny panties.” They not only accommodate a growing belly, but they can also be good throwaways considering all the unexpected things that are going on down below during pregnancy.

Should you be concerned about what’s coming out? “Some women have an increase in their vaginal discharge during pregnancy, and some don’t have an increase at all,” says Karen Nordahl, M.D., co- founder of Vancouver, British Columbia-based Fit to Deliver International and a Fit Pregnancy advisory board member. “A sudden increase should be investigated to make sure there is no infection.”

Here, we look at some common “leaks” for which you might need your throwaway undies or a panty liner. Find out which are merely annoying and which could signal a problem requiring medical attention.

Yeast Infection
The symptoms: Pregnant or not, you’ll experience the same signs, which can include itching, redness and soreness in the vaginal area, along with an odorless, white, cottage cheeselike discharge. Some women also have pain during intercourse and burning when they urinate.

Normal or not? Normal. because of hormonal and other changes, yeast infections are very common during pregnancy.

How to deal: Consult your doctor about prescription or over-the-counter vaginal creams or suppositories and, if deemed necessary, to rule out bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted disease (see below). Probiotics may also help.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
The symptoms: Bacterial vaginosis, an infection caused by an imbalance in the bacteria normally found in the vagina, is sometimes asymptomatic, but it can produce a fishy-smelling discharge that is most noticeable after sex. Itching and/or burning may accompany it.

Normal or not? Not. “Bacterial vaginosis starts out as a vaginal infection, but it can sometimes ascend into the uterus and cause premature rupture of the membranes and preterm birth,” says April Sarvis, M.D., an OB-GYN in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
How to deal: See your doctor right away. Prescription medications can clear up symptoms without endangering the fetus and decrease the likelihood of preterm labor.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
The symptoms: Chlamydia may produce no discharge or one that is slightly odorous. The discharge that’s sometimes a symptom of gonorrhea can be yellowish. And that caused by trichomoniasis (“trich”) can be foamy yellow-greenish and often associated with itching. These three infections can cause painful intercourse or urination.

Normal or not? Not. Having a sexually transmitted disease during pregnancy can lead to preterm labor and a uterine infection after delivery. Some organisms that cause STDs can pass through the placenta and affect the fetus; others can be transmitted to the baby during delivery.
How to deal: Get tested by your doctor. Many STDs can be safely treated with antibiotics during pregnancy.

Urine
The symptoms: Other than seeing your doctor, the best way to tell if you’re leaking urine (versus amniotic fluid; see below) is to note how often and when it occurs, says Sarvis. If you leak only occasionally, such as when you cough, sneeze or have a good belly laugh, it’s likely urine. The smell and color are helpful indicators, too.
Normal or not? Normal. Leaking urine occurs due to pressure of the growing uterus on the bladder.
How to deal: Kegel exercises—contracting and releasing the muscles around the vagina—help some women control their bladders. You also can perform “prophylactic voiding”—going to the bathroom before you have the actual sensation of needing to go. Whatever you do, don’t stop drinking lots of water in an attempt to avoid the problem.

Amniotic Fluid
The symptoms: Amniotic fluid (your “bag of waters”) should be clear, but it can also be brown, green, pink-tinged or yellow. And, unlike urine, this leakage doesn’t happen only sporadically; if your membranes are ruptured, you usually continue to leak fluid. If you’re unsure whether it’s amniotic fluid or urine, put on a pad and lie down for about 30 minutes. if you feel a small gush when you stand, it could be amniotic fluid.

Normal or not? Not. Until she goes into labor, a pregnant woman should never be leaking amniotic fluid.
How to deal: Call your doctor immediately.

Seeing Red
It’s not unusual for some pregnant women to spot after intercourse or a pelvic exam. But if it doesn’t stop shortly, have it checked out: Any bleeding during pregnancy is a red flag.
